With a requirement of establishing a business in Australia starting from 300,000 AUD, the Subclass 188A Australian Investment Residency is aimed at successful business owners. The investment amount is not high, but there are many conditions regarding assets, revenues achieved in Vietnam…

While browsing through news websites, Mr. T., the owner of a design company in Ho Chi Minh City, came across an advertisement inviting him to attend a workshop on the Subclass 188A investment residency program. According to the ad, the Australian Investment Residency 188A is an attractive option with an investment requirement of only 300,000 AUD (equivalent to 4.9 billion VND). With the 188A visa, the investor and their family can freely live, study, and work in Australia. Children are exempt from public school fees until the completion of high school. After a minimum of 2 years, they can apply for permanent residency in Australia to enjoy all rights and benefits as Australian citizens. Through this, investors have the opportunity to apply for Australian citizenship if they meet the conditions.

The advertisement caught Mr. T.’s attention because the requirements seemed simple with exceptional benefits. He decided to attend the event to learn more about this program. However, upon arrival, he learned that there were other conditions such as total assets, revenues… that he couldn’t meet.

The number of Vietnamese businesspeople investing in Australian residency is increasing. Investment migration to Australia for a better quality of life is a trend among many Vietnamese entrepreneurs. According to statistics from the Australian Department of Immigration, Vietnam has always been in the top 5 countries with the highest number of 188 investor visa applications:

2017-2018: 426 applications
2018-2019: 478 applications
2020-2021: 1,144 applications
2022-2023: 785 applications
To stimulate the economy after COVID-19, the Australian government has intensified efforts to attract high-value immigrant investors and create jobs for locals. In the fiscal years 2020-2022, the Australian Investment Residency Program has been prioritized for approval and quota increases. Therefore, the number of applications for this category has surged.
However, the quota for granting Subclass 188 investment residency visas has sharply decreased in the past 2 years. The quota for the new fiscal year 2023-2024 (starting from July 1, 2023) is only 1,900 visas. Therefore, new 188 applications will have to compete more fiercely. Currently, the allocated visa numbers for each state have not been announced. The advantage will belong to those who have prepared their applications ready to submit immediately when the states announce their quotas.
